Stephen Hoysted

My name is Stephen Hoysted and I was born inSydney1944. I am married and have two grown up children .

Like many people I drew and painted a lot as a child, but at around 11 years old I began to take it seriously, copying the drawing style of Eric Jolliffe and paintings of Albert Namatjira, Hans Heysen, Vincent Van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. In my early teens I had lessons at Granville Tech with Ken Reinhart and found the ‘Heidelberg’ painters. I painted well into my mid twenties when family and other priorities took over.

In 2004 my family gave me a surprise gift for my 60th birthday of a weekend oil painting workshop with Kasey Sealy which was the catalyst to get fully back into it seriously. I now paint regularly with The Australian Plein Air Painters group. I have also attended workshops with John Wilson, John Rice and John Corby.

My art could be described as fairly traditional but with my own style which is continuing to evolve. My aim is to capture the ambience of the scene, a glimpse.

I have also been a top 10 Finalist in Australian Artist magazine Art Prize Challenge No.21 -Landscapes issue 255 Sept. 2005. My works were also published in the April 2011 issue.
