Portrait painting by Malcolm Robertson

Malcolm will be our guest demonstrator for June. He has been a portrait artist for many years. He paints and draws in a number of mediums but currently predominantly uses oil paint for his portraits. Over the years he has painted hundreds of portraits so if you have been wondering what it takes to paint a portrait come along and see his demonstration on the 10th June 2013.

The meeting starts at 7:00 pm with the demonstration starting at 7:15 pm. Cost is $5 for members and $7 for non members. The venue is the Nepean Art Society Studio at the Old Council Chambers, Station street entrance, Penrith.

Here is some information on Karen for those who do not know her:

Karen Hull

Karen is a full-time artist and illustrator, who took up art later in life after 25 years of nursing and raising her family of four sons. It was after a family holiday to Tasmania 7 years ago where she visited the numerous wonderful galleries, that her love for art and drawing was rekindled.

Initially drawn to miniature art, she was accepted as an Exhibiting Member of the Australian Society of Miniature Art (NSW) and won Best Watercolour and Best in Show in her first year of exhibiting. Since then, she has gradually moved into working on a slightly larger scale and specialises in coloured pencil works.

She has won numerous awards and her artworks can be found in collections around the world. She is in constant demand for commissions and illustration work and also writes and sells a range of comprehensive art tutorials from her website at www.karenhullart.com.

She is a member of the Australian Guild of Realist Artists, the Coloured Pencil Society of America and is an active member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists. Her first children’s book Let’s Count Kisses was published in May of this year and she is currently working on her second book.

Shirley Ayers who has been a member of NAS for over 25 years will be starting a class for all mediums from the second week of March 2013. You can see some of Shirley’s work on her artist’s page here: Shirley Ayers artwork

The Hawkesbury Art Prize is a national competition calling on artists to enter their representation of contemporary Australian identity. This year’s entries have initiated from all states of the country. Three high profile judges have selected 50 finalists, and on Saturday 17th November 2012 the winners will be announced.

First prize will be donated by patron Maggie Scott and sponsors Turtle Landscaping Supplies, Tina Dwight Real Estate and private donors will present highly commended prizes. Federal MP for Macquarie, Louise Markus, will officially open the event at 6.00 pm. Musician Rhiannon Lawson will present her musical compositions throughout the evening. Please join us to celebrate the opening of this important Hawkesbury cultural event -The Hawkesbury Art Prize at Purple Noon Gallery. You will be enlightened and inspired!

Demonstration will be by award winning Contemporary Artist, Jody Graham. Her demonstration will lcover Contemporary Mixed media use in an Urban/Industrial Landscape.

This is what the Director of The Kedumba Collection of Contemporary Australian Drawings had to say about Jody’s work.

“Who did this drawing?” “Jody Graham” came the reply.  “It is very good – put that into the collection”.  The collection refers to the Kedumba Collection of Contemporary Australian Drawings.  The questioner was John Olsen, the Kedumba Trustee who saw the work in the Kedumba Drawing Award 2003.  Invited again in 2008, Jody’s work was selected by the judge that year, Jenny Sages.  High praise from two of Australia’s most prestigious artists and I can add little to such comments but to say Jody is a fine, gifted, self effacing artist with a deft touch and command of line and colour.
